Assassin’s Creed OdysseyĀ is anĀ action role-playingĀ video gameĀ developed byĀ Ubisoft QuebecĀ and published byĀ Ubisoft. It is the eleventh major installment in theĀ Assassin’s CreedĀ series and the successor to 2017’sĀ Assassin’s Creed Origins. It was released worldwide for,Ā PlayStation 4,Ā Xbox One, andĀ Nintendo SwitchĀ on October 5, 2018, with aĀ StadiaĀ version launching alongside the service in 2019. Like its predecessor, the game features a largeĀ open world, and adopts elements from theĀ role-playingĀ genre, putting more emphasis on combat and exploration than stealth.
The plot is set in aĀ fictional historyĀ of real-world events, but unlike other games in the series, it doesn’t focus on the conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order.[c]Ā The main narrative is set in the years 431ā422 BC and tells aĀ mythological historyĀ of theĀ Peloponnesian WarĀ betweenĀ AthensĀ andĀ Sparta. Players control a male or female mercenary (Ancient Greek:Ā Ī¼ĪÆĻĪøĪ¹ĪæĻĀ misthios) who fights on both sides of the conflict as they attempt to find their family. The modern-day portion of the story is set in the 21st century and continues from the events ofĀ Origins, as Layla Hassan, now an Assassin agent, searches forĀ AtlantisĀ and a powerful artifact it houses.
The game received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its gameplay, graphics, story, characters, and world design, while being criticised for feeling too ambitious and disregarding the established lore of theĀ Assassin’s CreedĀ series. It was also a favorable commercial success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide by March 2020. It was followed in November 2020 byĀ Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which takes place in medievalĀ EnglandĀ andĀ NorwayĀ during theĀ Viking expansion across Europe.
